This is WEA North West Region’s annual Spring Lecture for 2010. Our Spring lectures are intended to stimulate and provoke the flow of discussion and ideas that help change our society for the better.

Kate Pickett is co-author with Richard Wilkinson of the acclaimed book “The Spirit Level” which demonstrates significant evidence of why countries with high income inequality are worse for everyone.

·          The UK is one of the most unequal of all the developed countries.

·          There is a strong correlation between income inequality in a society and a wide range of health and social problems.

·          There is no correlation between economic growth and the same set of health and social problems.

·          Therefore, seeking reductions in inequality rather than chasing economic growth is now essential if we want to improve our society.

The WEA believes in the role of education in helping individuals and groups deal critically and creatively with their world in order to participate in changing it. This lecture provides you with the startling evidence about why we are all experiencing a “broken Britain” but more importantly it helps us begin the discussion of what we must do to change it.

Please join us for what promises to be an enjoyable and stimulating evening.
